What the intensive care unit provides
The ICU is equipped for patients who need continuous observation and organ support rather than a general ward bed. Every bed has piped oxygen and suction at the bedside, so support does not depend on moving cylinders between rooms.
- Ventilator support for patients unable to breathe adequately on their own
- Central oxygen and central suction piped to each bed
- Cardiac monitoring, with ECG, echocardiography and Echo Doppler available on site
- X-ray on the premises, so imaging does not require transferring the patient
- An in-house medical store, so drugs are available without sending relatives out at night
The unit sits inside an 18-bed hospital, so patients step down from intensive care to a ward bed in the same building, under the same team.
Conditions managed in intensive care
The ICU is used for medical emergencies and for patients whose condition can deteriorate quickly:
Cardiac events
Chest pain, arrhythmia and heart failure, with ECG and echocardiography available on site.
Respiratory failure
Severe pneumonia, acute asthma and COPD needing oxygen or ventilator support.
Neurological emergencies
Paralysis and brain haemorrhage requiring close neurological observation.
Poisoning and snake bite
Cases needing airway protection and continuous monitoring. More on this.
Severe infections
Severe malaria, dengue and jaundice with systemic complications.
Diabetic emergencies
Decompensated diabetes needing stabilisation and close monitoring.

Bringing a patient who may need intensive care? Call 02742-255540 before you set off. Telling the team what has happened lets them prepare the bed and equipment while you are on your way.
The hospital does not operate its own ambulance. Please arrange local transport, and call so staff can be ready when you arrive.
